Enrichment is a fun and exciting opportunity to expose your child to something new and challenging! We are pleased to announce our FALL 2023 line up of classes. Sign up early to make sure you get the class you want as our classes do have capacity limits. All classes are held at school from 3:25-4:30pm.

MONDAYS

6 Weeks: 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/27

Sports Mix
Grades 1-5

Participate in a variety of athletic activities such as soccer, basketball, kickball and hockey just to name a few. This program will also focus on developing skills to improve performance and enjoy physical activity. Students will be exposed to many different team and individual sports throughout the program. This class is taught by Mr. Truchsess, PE Teacher at SES

Magic

Grades 1-5

(NOTE: There will be NO magic on 10/30. Magic will have it’s last class on 12/4)

Students in grades 1 – 5 will learn three magic tricks per session from Tom O’Brien, a full-time professional magician whose credits include appearances on the Fox 61 Morning Show and WFSB’s Better Connecticut. 

Tom O’Brien is a master at his craft and an excellent and entertaining teacher.  All students will receive magic kits and a magic wand with the props necessary to perform them at home!  Please register soon before the spaces – alakazam – disappear!

Ukelele Club

Grades 3-5

Popular for its size, the uke is an easy instrument for kids to enjoy. Students will learn to strum chords to accompany singing songs with the ukulele. Requirement: Students must bring their own instrument of reasonable quality. Ukuleles of reasonable quality can be purchased for about $25 to $35. This course is taught by Mr. Tornatore,, Music teacher at SES

Art with the Art Spot

Grades 3-5

Learn how to create your own original character the way character artists do it. Using these skills, create an adventure story around your designed character, as well as your

character's friend and a pet. No character has to be "human", creativity is the key. Your young cartoonists will create a cartoon comic that you will find delightful! Manga cartooning will be included for those that enjoy it; others may choose a more traditional cartoon style!

Eyes for Learning

Grades 3-5

S.T.E.A.M. Works Using LEGO®   Children are working with standard LEGO® materials to problem-solve pre-engineering challenges involving structure, levers, gears, pulleys, and other elements of simple machines.  Each class build will be introduced with a different story to start the lesson and post-project challenges.  Projects may include wall rocket racers, battle top spinners, and flywheel cruisers.

Chess

Grade 3-5

Chess is the fun game of thinking. It has been proven to develop memory, concentration, focus, logical thinking and problem solving. Classes will involve a combination of learning and supervised playing. The class will be divided into two sections: Intermediate and Beginners. Intermediate students will focus on “tactics” (captures and checks). Beginning students will learn the basics from starting each game to selecting a move.  Connecticut Kids Play Chess, Inc. (CKPCI), probably the largest scholastic chess teaching organization in the state, will run the program. The owner of CKPCI is Glenn Budzinski, who has had a lifelong involvement with chess as a teacher, Expert-rated player and certified tournament director. Many CKPCI students have gone on to become state champions.

6 weeks: 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15

Music Video Workshop

Grade 5

Students will create a short music video. The class requires actors, as well as creative thinkers and technical people. Students will choose a song. Some students will be the “actors”, while other students will be the screenwriters, videographers and editors. All students will use storytelling and sequencing skills to plan their using a storyboard. This course is taught by Mr. Tornatore, Music Teacher at SES

NYC Street Art Class (class runs until 4:40)

Grades 3-5

This course will be taught by Mr. Thomas DiMarzo. Over 8-weeks students will learn the history of NYC street art.  The students will learn about legendary NYC street artists Jean Michel-Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and James de la Vega.  After learning about the brief history of NYC street art and the artists who made it famous, the students will embark on an art project in the style of each Legendary street artist.  

**Each student that signs up will be provided with a sketchbook, pencils, colored pencils, erasers, and Sharpies.  All your child needs to bring is an open and creative mind. Please note this class goes until 4:40

Scotty Cares Club

Grades K-5

Do you like to throw kindness around like confetti? Do you like to fill other people's buckets? If so, then The Scotty Cares Club is for you! During our time together we will learn about different organizations around town and how we can give back, and support the greater community around us. We hope you will join us in creating these meaningful projects! Join Ms. Donovan and Mrs. Hamann both teachers at SES for an afternoon of helping our local communities.

Art with the Art Spot

Grades K-2

From Clay Sculpture to Drawing to Watercolors and more! We’ll present the basic rules of art with each medium we explore. While we focus on skills and techniques rather than the end product. It’s all about hands-on fun, creativity and understanding the techniques.

Yoga

Grades 3-5

This fun, warm and welcoming practice introduces children to yoga teaching flexibility and strength as well as self-soothing breathing techniques. Practicing yoga poses encourages children to clear their mind and focus on the effort, building self-confidence and coordination while teaching respect for self and others. This focus translates to the ability to act and behave mindfully and with compassion, to be brave, to know happiness and to find an inner peace – all achieved while the children dream, laugh and foster their imaginations.

Eyes for Learning

Grades K-2

Children are working independently and cooperatively as they begin to explore simple machines using LEGO® early childhood materials.  Projects may include spin tops, cranes, and hockey players.  Benefits Include: hands-on building skills, problem solving strategies, understanding the building blocks of simple engineering

Before enrichment begins, you will receive an email from Kerri Austin and Tracy Liao to confirm your child’s enrollment.

Enrichment classes are open to students in Grade K-5, but please note some classes do have
grade-level restrictions. No refunds will be available once classes begin.
